Officer John Haggerty, a 22-year veteran of the department, was recognized along with his peers at a ceremony held on Thursday, Oct. 31, in Bridgeport, said Norwalk Police Lt. Terry Blake.

During his time with the department, Haggerty is one of the original members of the Traffic Unit, which began in 2011. During his 8 years in the unit, he has made over 1,230 drunk driving arrests and issued more 3,500 tickets for motor vehicle violations.

Blake said that Haggerty is a leader within the unit and always participates in the Distracted Driving, Click It or Ticket and Drunk Driving enforcement operations within the city.

"Officer Haggerty works tirelessly to make Norwalk's streets safer for motorists and pedestrians through enforcement," the department said.

In addition to his traffic safety work, Haggerty is also a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. In 2018, he and Officer Wasilewski checked or installed over 100 car seats.

He can often be found with a new parent or parent to be, educating them about child passenger safety, while installing their car seat.

"His proactive approach to his job and hard work help to make Norwalk a safer community for the motoring public," the department said.
